The Valley Forge Road Culvert Replacement project involved the replacement of an existing culvert crossing Cates Creek on Valley Forge Rd. in Hillsborough, NC. The project was specified to install a quadruple-barrel 90 IN CAAP culvert with concrete headwalls during a 3-week shutdown of the roadway. However, it was determined that this would cause undue hardship to a business located at the end of the dead-end road.

For this reason, Chatham worked closely with the project designer, Summit Design & Engineering Services, as well as Chris Beatty with Pomona Pipe Products, to find a solution to the issue. A quadruple-barrel aluminum pipe culvert with segmental aluminum headwalls, and an intermediate end-wall was designed, proposed, and stage-constructed for the original contract price of the project, while maintaining access to the business through the use of alternative detour routes.

It was also necessary to support and maintain the operation of a 12 inch Concrete-Asbestos waterline during excavation and construction of the culvert replacement, in order to maintain service to the aforementioned business at the end of the dead-end road. Chatham proposed and constructed a system utilizing a 20 inch steel encasement and columnal support system to maintain service of the waterline and complete the project.
